BBC Monitoring is recruiting Digital Journalists to work as part of an expanding team covering Africa in the BBC offices in Nairobi.
BBC Monitoring offers open source monitoring of TV, radio, print and digital media around the world. It is an important part of the BBC’s newsgathering operation and provides content for BBC output and a range of other customers.

Role Responsibility
As a Digital Journalist, you’ll play a pivotal role in meeting the needs of BBC Monitorings users by identifying news and key insights from TV, radio, newspapers and social media across Africa. You will produce engaging content in English on a range of different platforms. You will work within a shift pattern, which may also be dictated by events as they happen.

You’ll use a variety of tools and techniques to mine the media for story ideas, identify emerging trends and narratives and contribute to advance planning for coverage of key events.

The Ideal Candidate
You’ll have experience as a journalist, excellent writing skills and be able to identify material that makes a high impact story of interest to BBC Monitorings customers. You have a thorough understanding of the media environment ofAfrica and good knowledge of political, cultural, religious and economic factors significant in the region.
You are willing and able to embrace new ways of working and new technology and are constantly looking for ways to innovate.
You’ll need complete fluency in one (or more) of the following languages: Swahili, Somali, Amharic, Tigrinya, Oromo, French, Arabic, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Kinyarwanda/Kirundi and/or any other language dominant in Africas media scene.
