I must confess, Girls Garage Instagram page is one of my favourite places to mentally hangout. I’ve been stalking them for quite some time now and have fallen in awe of the amazing things that come out from their space, all built by girls. Like this Woodwork that is seen here:
Girls Garage is a program of the nonprofit Project H Design. Project H was founded in 2008 by designer and builder Emily Pilloton to celebrate and cultivate the raw brilliance of youth through rigorous, hands-on design and building projects in the classroom and in their communities.
Using the power of creativity, design, and hands-on building to amplify the raw brilliance of youth, transform communities, and improve K-12 public education from within, the all-girls program for hardcore building and community projects and became the blueprint for Girls Garage.
Girls have built doghouses, steel sculptures, even furniture for a local women’s shelter. They have learned to jumpstart a car, MIG-weld, and draft in Adobe Illustrator.
Girls Garage, which is located in West Berkeley, is a 3600 sq. ft. space and includes a woodshop, metalshop, digital fabrication studio, and classroom, all designed to accommodate our many activities, from screen-printing and laser-etching to carpentry, craft-making and lock-picking.
