The Republic is hiring part-time editors to join our editorial team. Responsibilities will include commissioning essays and working with authors to produce quality writing, in line with our style guide

The sub editors position is aimed at professionals (3+ years of professional work experience) who possess:
  • A Master’s degree (minimum) and top-tier academic credentials (please include your degree class in your resume);
  • Excellent research, writing and reading skills;
  • Demonstrable interest in Nigerian and African affairs;
  • Proven ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear, accessible way;
  • Previous editorial and proofreading experience; and
  • Ability to work at a fast pace, remotely and independently while part of a team.

You should be a voracious reader who is self-motivated and eager to learn, and you must be able to write or commission (and edit) three essays per month for The Republic.

We are particularly interested in editors with expertise in the following areas:

  • Arts & Culture;
  • Business and the Economy;
  • Climate Change and the Environment;
  • Gender & Feminism;
  • History;
  • Politics;
  • Science and Technology; and
  • World Affairs

Most importantly, we are looking for candidates interested in becoming subject matter experts on Nigerian and African affairs. Such people will, at the minimum, possess genuine interest in The Republic and what/how we publish, and our core topics: climate change; culture & society; economics; gender & feminism; history; international affairs; politics & security; science & technology.

This position is pays a fixed fee of N60,000 per essay produced; is fully remote and part-time; and open to all candidates (candidates based in Nigeria are highly encouraged).
