Residency Unlimited (RU) is pleased to announce an Open Call for the 2023 New York City-Based Artist Residency Program.
This residency is dedicated to artists who are traditionally underrepresented in the arts. RU’s NYC-Based Artist Residency Program is accepting applications from artists who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color, with research-based practices that bridge gaps in historical knowledge. The three-month residency will take place from April 3 – June 30, 2023.

Who We Are
Residency Unlimited (RU) is a non-profit art organization that supports the creation, presentation, and circulation of contemporary art and ideas through its unique residency program and year-round public programs. Located within a former South Congregational Church in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, RU is a multifunctional space, acting as a hub and meeting place for RU’s various community activities and public programs, including, talks, screenings, performances, and exhibitions. Here, artists and curators-in-residence hold meetings, conduct research, and at times produce work.
Who Can Apply
– RU welcomes applications from BIPOC artists working across media.
– Artists have a research-based practice that bridges gaps in historical knowledge.
– Artists live in one of the five boroughs.
– The artist has a valid social security number.
– Matriculated students are not eligible.
– Please note that this program does not offer studio space.
Four artists will be selected from applications reviewed by a jury of arts professionals. Past jurors have included:
- Natasha Becker, Curator of African Art Fine Arts Museum San Francisco and co-founder of Assembly Room;
- Rachel Raphaela Gugelberger, Curator;
- Alaina Simone, artist liaison, art consultant, and curator;
- Christopher Udemezue (2020 RU alum), visual artist and founder of RAGGA NYC; and
- Ilk Yasha, Studio Museum Institute Coordinator.
Residency activities are expected to take place in-person and combine virtual activity as well. Please note that RU may modify the residency as needed in accordance with developing NYC, State and CDC COVID-19 guidelines to assure the safety of RU staff and residents.
What You Will Get
– A $3,300 stipend.
– $500 production support.
– Weekly one-on-one visits with guest curators/critics, both in person and on-line, that align artistic/curatorial interests. Visits will include meetings with guest curator Rachel Raphaela Gugelberger, the RU team and invited art professionals.
– Activities with international artist resident community including artist presentations, a monthly salon with guest curator Rachel Raphaela Gugelberger and field trips.
– Project/production assistance.
– A culminating group exhibition curated by Rachel Raphaela Gugelberger at PS122 Gallery in the East Village, June 5 – June 27, 2023.
Rachel Raphaela Gugelberger is the Curator of Visual Arts at Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center in the Bronx. An NY-based curator with a focus on place-based practices around social, cultural, and civic issues, exhibitions include Storying, the culminating exhibition for the 2021 NYC-Based Artist Residency Program; Bound up Together: On the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment at Smack Mellon, Brooklyn; Hold These Truths at Nathan Cummings Foundation in Manhattan and Jameco Exchange, a site-responsive and socially engaged education exhibition in a vacant storefront in Jamaica, Queens. She is an Editorial Fellow at Independent Media Institute where she is the founding editor of &Art, a project of Earth I Food I Life which highlights the work of cultural workers who integrate art, environmentalism, food justice, and the wellbeing of the planet’s inhabitants.
