“Black Girl Chronicles: I wore this head wrap to my brother’s football practice one day, WITH my DEFEND BLACK WOMANHOOD shirt on, minding my black business and a white father had the audacity to ask me “What’s that thang on yo head?” When I tell you that MY MOTHER WENT IN, SHE WENT IN‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️I know that he will NEVER make that mistake again. But why are these mistakes still being made? Why in 2019 do they think that they can do these things? As a 16 year old, I think things ALL THE TIME, but I know the difference between thinking something and saying something. Who am I to comment on someone’s attire? What they wear has nothing to do with me. I stay in my lane and keep my mouth shut. His comment was so violating. If I wasn’t the strong willed, thick skinned, confident Black girl that I am, his ignorant comment could have destroyed me, my self esteem, my embracing the connection to my roots and culture. It could have been very damaging. White people, you gotta do better. You have to practice more self control and refrain from your ignorant comments and microaggressions. You don’t have a pass, you CANNOT do these things, and if you do, you will suffer the consequences. And while you’re at it, teach your kids too please. You have a responsibility to not have your kids out here hurting people’s feelings like they don’t have any home training. And for reasons like this is what motivates me to do what I do. These conversations have to be had. We have to defend our Black girls and Black women at all costs. Now go tell someone how beautiful our blackness is.” Shirt from @blackvibetribe ✊
